What to Buy in Australia on Vacation – Unique Souvenirs, Treats & Gifts

Things to Buy on Vacation in Australia

Whether you're visiting Australia for the first time or returning to explore more of its wonders, one of the joys of travel is bringing home something special. Australia is filled with unique souvenirs and locally made gifts that serve as perfect reminders of your time down under - for yourself, your kids, and your friends and family back home.

As a Sydney-based photographer and Aussie local, I’m always being asked what to buy while visiting Australia. Here are some of my favourite finds – from the fun and iconic to the beautiful and meaningful.

Aboriginal Art - A Contemporary Touch of Culture

Let's start with Aboriginal art. It is one of the oldest and most meaningful artistic traditions in the world, and it’s a beautiful way to take a piece of Australia home with you.

Personally, I’m a big Aboriginal art fan and love the contemporary feel many artists bring to traditional stories and symbols. When I lived in Paris, I purchased several pieces - they were my connection to home, a reminder of our rich cultural history and the vibrant creativity of First Nations artists.

You can find authentic art in galleries across Sydney, Melbourne, and in many regional areas. Look for certificates of authenticity and consider supporting Indigenous-owned galleries when possible.

Ugg Boots – Warm & Cosy (But Not for the Streets!)

If you’re visiting Australia during the cooler months, Ugg boots are a cosy essential. Made from sheepskin with a soft fleece lining, they’re beloved for their warmth and comfort.

But here’s something most visitors don’t realise – Australians usually wear Uggs at home, as slippers. While they’ve become a fashion statement in other parts of the world, you’ll rarely see Aussies wearing them in public. Still, they make a great gift or treat for yourself on chilly nights.

Australian Opals – Meaningful Jewellery Gifts

Australia is home to 95% of the world’s opals, making it the ideal place to purchase a stunning and meaningful piece of jewellery. These shimmering, colour-rich gemstones are often linked to dreams, creativity, and love.

Even more special? Opals are the birthstone for October - so they’re perfect for gifts, especially for October babies like me! Whether it’s a delicate pendant, a statement ring, or something for your partner or child, opal jewellery makes a heartfelt and elegant souvenir - especially if you’re celebrating a milestone trip or engagement.

Tasty Pantry Staples – For the Foodies in Your Life

If you’re more of a savoury snack person (or shopping for a home chef), Australia has some great pantry staples worth packing. Just remember to check what you can take home through your country’s customs before you stock up.

  • Macadamia Nuts – Native to Australia, these buttery, nutrient-rich nuts are perfect for snacking or baking. You’ll find them roasted, salted, honey-glazed or even dipped in chocolate.
  • Bush Spices – Think lemon myrtle, wattleseed, pepperberry and saltbush. These native ingredients are fantastic for anyone who loves experimenting in the kitchen.
  • Manuka Honey – Australian Manuka is rich in antibacterial properties and makes a luxurious addition to tea or toast.
  • Vegemite – A classic! Whether you love it or not, this salty spread is part of Aussie culture. (Tip: it’s best enjoyed in small amounts on buttered toast.)

These make great souvenirs for food-loving friends or additions to your own pantry to extend your Aussie holiday a little longer once you're home.

Tim Tams (and the Tim Tam Slam)

Tim Tams are arguably Australia’s most beloved biscuit - two layers of chocolate malted cookie with a creamy filling, all wrapped in chocolate. Delicious straight from the pack, but even better when you try a Tim Tam Slam.

What’s a Tim Tam Slam? Bite off both ends of the biscuit, then use it like a straw to sip hot tea or coffee. Once the inside melts, pop the whole thing in your mouth for an oozy, chocolatey explosion. Pure joy – and definitely a travel memory your kids will talk about for years!

More Aussie Icons to Pack in Your Suitcase

  • Eucalyptus and Tea Tree Oil – Natural and fresh, these essential oils are quintessentially Australian and great for skin care or home remedies.
  • Locally Made Candles or Soaps – Pick up small-batch products from weekend markets or local boutiques for beautiful gifts that support small businesses.
  • Australian Wine or Gin – If your country allows it, pack a bottle of Barossa Valley Shiraz or small-batch Aussie gin for your next dinner party.
  • Bush Spices and Seasonings – Wattleseed, lemon myrtle and finger lime salt make for great kitchen souvenirs and gifts for foodie friends.

Sweet Treats for the Kids (and Grown-Ups Too!)

Australia does chocolate and lollies (candy) a little differently - and they make great, easy-to-pack gifts for kids and friends. Here are a few family favourites:

  • Caramello Koalas – Cute, gooey, and very Aussie! These chocolate koalas with caramel centres are always a hit with little ones.
  • Freddo Frogs are another childhood favourite – solid milk chocolate in a fun frog shape.
  • Cherry Ripes – A rich combination of cherry and coconut coated in dark chocolate. They’re a love-it-or-hate-it kind of treat, but definitely iconic.
  • Minties – A chewy, mint-flavoured lolly that’s been around for generations. Great for long road trips or flights (just watch your dental work!).

You can find all of these in the confectionery aisle of any supermarket - easy to toss into your luggage or buy just before your flight home.

Final Thoughts – Souvenirs with Heart

The best things to bring home from your trip to Australia aren’t just souvenirs – they’re stories. Whether it’s an artwork that reminds you of a sunrise walk, the chocolate biscuits you dunked at breakfast, or a pair of slippers that warm your feet and your memories, these items help you carry a little piece of Australia with you, long after your holiday ends.

If you’re planning your trip and want to capture the magic of your time in Sydney with stunning portraits, as a Sydney Portrait Photographer I’d love to help you create something truly special. These won’t just be holiday snapshots – they’ll be beautifully crafted images that reflect your family’s connection and joy, ready to be displayed in your home and treasured for years to come.
