A Surprise Proposal at Mary Booth Reserve, Kirribilli - Dhaval & Archana

Dhaval travelled all the way from the USA to Australia with one very special plan: to surprise his girlfriend, Archana, with a proposal overlooking Sydney Harbour.

As he was visiting Australia for the first time, he wanted a beautiful location that would capture the character of Sydney while giving them a memorable setting for this important moment. After chatting through a few ideas, I suggested Mary Booth Reserve in Kirribilli, with its wonderful views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House and harbour.

This is the story of how his carefully planned surprise unfolded. 💍

A Surprise Proposal Overlooking Sydney Harbour

Mary Booth Reserve was a lovely choice for Dhaval and Archana. Across the water, the Harbour Bridge and Opera House created that unmistakable Sydney backdrop, while the reserve offered a more relaxed setting for their proposal.

Archana had no idea what Dhaval had planned. When the moment arrived, she was genuinely surprised. Her reaction said everything: the excitement, the smiles and the happiness of realising what was happening.

She Said Yes!

Once Archana said yes, the nerves gave way to laughter and excitement. There was time to take it all in, enjoy the moment together and celebrate their engagement with Sydney Harbour stretching out behind them.

These are the moments I love documenting: the reactions that happen naturally, the way a couple looks at each other afterwards, and the excitement of having a new chapter to look forward to.

Celebrating at Mary Booth Reserve

After the proposal, we wandered around the reserve and made the most of the harbour views. With the Opera House and Harbour Bridge in the distance, we had a chance to capture a few different perspectives while Dhaval and Archana enjoyed their first moments as an engaged couple.

For visitors coming to Sydney, a location like Mary Booth Reserve offers a beautiful way to bring the city into their photographs without losing sight of the couple themselves.

Their First Portraits as an Engaged Couple

We finished with relaxed portraits of the two of them together. By this point, the surprise was behind them, and they could simply enjoy being together and celebrate what had just happened.

The photographs captured both the setting they had chosen and the excitement of the occasion, giving Dhaval and Archana a collection of images from the beginning of their engagement in Sydney.

A Beautiful Sydney Harbour Proposal

Mary Booth Reserve in Kirribilli is a wonderful option for a proposal with views of both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. It was a fitting setting for Dhaval and Archana, who had travelled from the USA to mark this milestone during their first visit to Australia.

Choosing a location is only one part of planning a surprise proposal. Timing, positioning and knowing where to stand can all make a difference, particularly when you are organising everything from overseas. I help my clients work through these details before they arrive, so they can feel prepared and enjoy the moment when it comes.

Dhaval and Archana, thank you for trusting me to capture such an important occasion. Congratulations to you both!
