When Brooke travelled to Sydney from Los Angeles, it was her first time visiting Australia, so she wanted to capture some photographs to remember her time here. She chose two of Sydney’s most iconic locations for her solo portrait session: Bondi Beach and the Sydney Opera House.
A Sydney Solo Portrait Session at Bondi Beach and the Opera House
Morning at Bondi Beach
We met in the morning at Bondi Beach on a beautiful Sydney day, with clear blue skies and those incredible views across the ocean.
We spent the morning exploring Bondi, starting with photographs along the beach before heading up to the iconic Icebergs for a coffee and to take in the views.
Bondi was the perfect setting for relaxed, natural portraits. The beautiful blue ocean, sandy beach and dramatic coastline gave us plenty of different backdrops and that unmistakable Sydney feel.
I love photographing solo sessions at Bondi because the location offers so much variety. You can capture beautiful portraits along the beach, by the water and on the promenade, all within a short walk.
Sunset at the Sydney Opera House
Later that day, we met again at the Sydney Opera House as the sun began to set.
The light was beautiful, and the atmosphere around the Harbour was completely different from our morning at Bondi. With the Opera House sails, Harbour Bridge and evening light as our backdrop, we created another collection of portraits that felt distinctly Sydney.
It was also the perfect way to finish Brooke's day, as she was heading into the Opera House afterwards to see a performance.
I loved that her photo shoot became part of her experience of Sydney rather than simply something added to her itinerary.
Capturing your first visit to Sydney
Having photographs taken while travelling is such a wonderful way to remember a trip, particularly when it’s your first time visiting somewhere.
You can see the Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach in countless photographs, but having your own portraits taken in these places creates something much more personal. You’re not simply photographing the landmarks, you’re creating photographs that show you were actually there, experiencing them.
For visitors to Sydney, I often recommend choosing more than one location if you have the time. Bondi Beach and Sydney Harbour offer such different scenery, and photographing in the morning and again around sunset means you can create a much more varied collection of portraits.
It was so much fun photographing Brooke during her first visit from LA, and I hope these photographs always remind her of a beautiful day in Sydney.
