Mitch & Maddison’s Surprise Proposal at Balmoral Beach

Some of my favourite proposal sessions take place away from Sydney's best-known landmarks, in locations where the setting feels a little quieter and the focus stays firmly on the couple.

Balmoral Beach is one of those places. With its calm harbour water, sandy shoreline and beautiful headland views, it has a relaxed coastal feel that makes it a lovely setting for a surprise proposal.

When Mitch contacted me, he had a plan to surprise Maddison during their Sydney getaway. She thought they were simply enjoying a weekend away from Brisbane. She had no idea that Mitch was about to ask her to marry him.

A Surprise Proposal at Balmoral

Mitch wanted somewhere beautiful and intimate for the proposal, with the harbour as a backdrop rather than a busy tourist landmark. Balmoral was a lovely choice, offering a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of natural beauty.

We planned the details in advance, including the timing and where I would position myself to capture the moment without drawing attention to what was about to happen.

As they arrived by the water, Maddison still had no idea what Mitch had planned. Then he got down on one knee.

It was one of those moments where everything else seems to fade into the background. Maddison was completely surprised, Mitch had the excitement and nerves that come with asking such an important question, and then came the smiles and the realisation that they were engaged.

These are the moments I love photographing most. There's no need to direct the reaction or recreate anything afterwards. I can simply capture the surprise, the first embrace and all those little expressions that make each proposal unique to the couple.

Celebrating Their Engagement at Balmoral Beach

After the proposal, we had time for a relaxed couple session around Balmoral. With the initial excitement settling in, Mitch and Maddison could enjoy being engaged and take in the setting together.

We made the most of the beach, the harbour views and the surrounding rocks, moving naturally between locations as the light softened. I gave them a little direction where needed, but kept the session relaxed so they could enjoy the experience rather than feel as though they were posing for the camera.

The result was a lovely mix of photographs: moments of the two of them together, quiet embraces, laughter and portraits that bring back the feeling of that evening.

For couples travelling to Sydney, I think this is one of the best parts of including portraits after a proposal. You come away with more than photographs of the question itself. You also have images celebrating the two of you at the beginning of your engagement, in a place that will always remind you of the occasion.

Why We Chose Balmoral for Their Proposal

Balmoral has a different feel from the more recognisable Sydney Harbour locations. Rather than the grand city skyline, you have the beach, the headland and the water, creating a setting that feels relaxed and naturally beautiful.

It's also a lovely place to continue with engagement portraits after the proposal. The beach and surrounding rocky areas offer a variety of backdrops within a relatively small area, so we can create a collection of photographs without spending the session travelling between locations.

Timing makes a difference, too. I generally recommend planning around the light and the atmosphere you want, taking into account how busy the beach may be. Before the session, we'll discuss the location, where the proposal will happen and how I'll photograph it discreetly.
