What clients say?
Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world for photographs, with iconic landmarks, sparkling harbour views and stunning beaches all within easy reach.
But choosing the right location and time of day can make a huge difference to your experience and the final photographs.
After photographing families, couples, proposals and visitors from around the world in Sydney for many years, I know that every location has its own special time when the light, atmosphere and surroundings come together beautifully.
Whether you are dreaming of the classic Sydney Opera House image, a romantic harbour sunset or relaxed beach portraits, I can help you choose the location that best suits your vision.
If you are dreaming of the iconic Sydney photograph with the Opera House sails and Harbour Bridge together, this is one of the most recognisable views in the city.
If you’re looking for that classic Sydney backdrop, this is one of my favourite locations for photographs of the Opera House sails with the harbour stretching out behind you. The Harbour Bridge can also be photographed nearby, making it possible to include both iconic Sydney landmarks in your session.
From across the harbour, we can capture beautiful views of the Opera House sails, with the Harbour Bridge just a short walk away.
Early morning is usually my preferred time for this location because:
This location is particularly special for families visiting Sydney for the first time, couples celebrating a milestone and anyone wanting photographs that really capture their time in Sydney.
A little insider tip: this viewpoint is across the harbour from the Opera House itself. The walk to the Opera House steps takes approximately 15–20 minutes, so it’s important to allow enough time if you’d like to include both locations in your session. For families with young children, I may recommend keeping things to one location to keep the experience relaxed and enjoyable.
The Opera House and Harbour Bridge can also be photographed from other Sydney Harbour locations, including around the Royal Botanic Gardens, or as part of an evening harbour session for a completely different atmosphere.
Being at the Opera House itself creates a completely different experience.
The steps, sweeping curves and incredible architecture provide a beautiful backdrop while allowing you to truly feel part of one of Sydney’s most famous landmarks.
Both morning and sunset can create stunning photographs depending on the style you are looking for.
Sunset sessions on the Opera House steps can be particularly magical, with beautiful skies, soft evening light and the harbour creating a wonderful atmosphere.
The Opera House steps are particularly beautiful in the late afternoon and around sunset, when the light softens and the harbour takes on a warm glow. It’s a wonderful time for couples, proposals, families and visitors wanting photographs with the Opera House itself as the backdrop.
As the sun gets lower, we can make the most of the changing light, from softer portraits in the late afternoon to beautiful skies and evening atmosphere as the session comes to an end.
The Opera House can become busier later in the day, particularly around performance times, so I’ll help plan the timing of your session to make the most of the light while finding quieter moments where possible.
If you love the idea of photographing the Opera House at sunset, this is a very different experience from the classic morning view across the harbour. Both have their own feel, depending on the atmosphere you’re looking for.
There is something truly special about Sydney Harbour in the evening.
As the sun begins to soften, the harbour takes on beautiful warm tones, reflections appear on the water and the city begins to sparkle as the evening comes alive.
A sunset harbour session is less about the classic postcard image and more about capturing the feeling of being in Sydney.
Perfect for:
If you’re visiting Sydney and would like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as the backdrop for your photographs, you can find out more about my Sydney Opera House photoshoots on the link below.
Sydney’s beaches are at their most beautiful in the final hour before sunset.
This timing allows us to enjoy:
A beach session offers a completely different feeling to the harbour locations. It is relaxed, natural and captures the Australian coastal lifestyle.
Children can explore, families can walk barefoot and couples can simply enjoy the coastline together while I capture the moments naturally.
Perfect for:
Sydney has beautiful light throughout the day, but for portraits I generally recommend avoiding the middle of the day where possible.
The midday sun can be quite harsh, creating stronger shadows and brighter highlights, and the warmer temperatures can be challenging, especially for families with young children.
For the most comfortable and beautiful experience, I usually recommend:
Early morning
Final hour before sunset
“Sarah is a really lovely and experienced photographer who made me and my partner feel comfortable and relaxed. She is knowledgeable about local scenery and lighting, and captured our candid emotions beautifully. We had a wonderful time and are so grateful for the amazing photographs.”

Every family, couple and celebration is different, which is why I don’t believe there is one perfect Sydney location for everyone.
The best choice depends on:
Before your session, I’ll help you choose the location and timing that will create the best experience for you.
My goal is not to create a rushed photograph at an iconic location. I want your session to feel relaxed and enjoyable, like exploring Sydney with a friend, while capturing beautiful photographs that tell the story of your time here.
Once you've chosen the location and timing, I'll take care of the planning and guide you through the session. You can find out more about what to expect from your session, from planning through to seeing your photographs, on my How It Works page.
