Kirribilli has some of Sydney Harbour’s most beautiful views. For Philip, a stone jetty overlooking the water, with the Harbour Bridge nearby and the Opera House across the harbour, was the perfect place to ask Jennifer to marry him. She had absolutely no idea what was coming.
The Moment
I was already discreetly positioned on the jetty when Philip guided Jennifer towards the water’s edge. She was taking in the harbour views, completely unaware of what was about to happen.
Then Philip got down on one knee, with the Harbour Bridge behind them and the Opera House across the water.
Jennifer’s expression said everything. First surprise, then disbelief, followed by the excitement of realising what was happening. I love photographing these moments because every proposal unfolds differently. You can plan the details in advance, but the reactions are always unique to the couple.

The stone jetty sits close to the water, with views across the harbour towards the Opera House and around to the Harbour Bridge. It offers a different atmosphere from the busier tourist areas, while still giving you that unmistakably Sydney backdrop.
The evening we met Jennifer and Philip was overcast. Rather than detracting from the setting, the soft light gave the photographs a lovely, gentle atmosphere.

From the Jetty to the Park
After the proposal, we continued into the nearby park for Jennifer and Philip’s engagement portraits.
With the Harbour Bridge rising above us and the Opera House across the water, it was a beautiful setting for photographs of the two of them newly engaged. Once the surprise had passed, they could relax together and enjoy the excitement of this new chapter.
